California legislature continues to try to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants

At least Schwarzenegger continues to get this issue right even if he may be wrong on the CO2 emissions bill.

SACRAMENTO, August 31, 2006 - The latest attempt to allow illegal immigrants to obtain California driver's licenses passed the Legislature on Wednesday, but it was doomed as soon as the final vote was taken.

A spokeswoman said Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will veto it.

"The governor will not sign any legislation that in any way threatens public safety," spokeswoman Margita Thompson said.

The bill that passed the Senate on a 21-13 vote was lawmakers' eighth attempt at legalizing driver's' licenses for illegal immigrants. It was sent to Schwarzenegger with no debate and the bare majority of votes needed.

The measure by Sen. Gil Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, would overturn a 1993 law that prohibits the state from issuing licenses to drivers who cannot prove they are in the country legally.

Talk about politicians pandering to their base.

We've really got to get rid of Gil Cedillo. Driver's licenses for illegal immigrants is his pet project and this is the eighth time he's tried to get this type of bill passed.

If Arnold ever signs one of these into law, he can start digging his own political grave.

UPDATE @ 12:12pm: HotAir's latest Vent also focuses on illegal immigration, briefly discussing a Post Office in Mayfield, CA where pro-illegal immigration protestors flew a Mexican flag before going on with a trailer for an upcoming documentary, Border War.
